Niels Hansen - Questa o quella "Rigoletto" - 1916

The Danish tenor Niels Hansen (1880-1969) was one of the leading tenors at The Royal Danish Opera for many years in the beginning of the last century.

Today he is almost forgotten, but when he made his debut in November 1909 (as Rodolphe in "La Bohéme) he was compared to the great Vilhelm Herold. When Herold retired in 1915, Hansen took over many of his parts - and added a few more to his repertoire. He was the first to sing Lenski in "Eugen Onegin" and the first Parsifal in Denmark - both took place in 1915, and through the years he gained more and more popular among the audience - especially when he and soprano Tenna Frederiksen Kraft were on stage together. One of their biggest successes were Verdi's "Otello" in 1927.

Niels Hansen made his recording debut in 1912, and up to 1930 he made nearly 200 recordings. He retired in 1949 - after 40 years on stage - and according to the critics he still had a masterful voice when he was in his late sixties.

Questa o quella is sung (and labelled) in Danish.
